Enhancing Employee Well-Being Through Internal Communication

Current Trends and Issues in Internal Communication

Part of the book series: New Perspectives in Organizational Communication ((NPOC))

Abstract

This chapter takes a practitioner-focused look at recent trends in internal communication and employee well-being. Specifically, I explore scholarly research that addresses the ways in which strategic communicators and organizational leaders hinder and promote the various aspects of employee well-being. This chapter also draws upon the job-demands resources model from the management literature to suggest that organizations are best served by viewing their communication processes and tools as job resources to contribute to employees’ social, psychological, and physical health. Conversely, a lack of information and unguided everyday talk in organizations can take a psychological toll on employees.
