Abstract
This chapter sets the tone for this handbook. The chapter foregrounds contemporary Africa’s relations with the world in the context of the long history of the continent with other regions of the world, particularly, the Arabs and Europe. The shift from mutual relations to violent encounters of slave trade, imperialism, and colonialism was put in analytical perspectives. Also, Africa’s relations with the world in the contemporary times were analyzed in its multidimensional forms. The chapter also summarizes the contributions of the various authors in the handbook.
