Abstract
Northern Rangpur and Kurigram districts of Bangladesh are among the frequently flood- prone areas. This study is aimed to identify the resilience capability as well as most influential factors contributing to flood resilience using data from Gangachara and Pirgachha Upazilas under Rangpur district and Ulipur upazila under Kurigram district. There are 30 respondents from each unions considering their age more than 30 years and having experience with flood were selected for semi-structured interview and questionnaire survey. Likert five scales and Principle Component Analysis (PCA) were used for interpreting the community resilience and identifying most contributing factors to flood resilience. The results reveal that social factors were contribution more to flood resilience (>2.94) than institutional capacity (<1.7). Besides, most influential factors were found to be different in the three individual locations. Sanitary inundation, emergency rescue and education level were found to be more influential factors for Buraburi union whereas maximum number of food scarcity, distance to health care as well as land and forest cover losses for Kolkanda union. On the other hand, lack of social trust, lack of early warning system and delay or insufficient recovery of losses was found to be determinants for Chhaola union. This study is portraying the areas which need to be considered for development as well as the factors or issues those are needed to be addressed for enhancing the resilience capacity to flood in these areas.
