Abstract

This chapter explores the historical context that contributed to the current mental health challenges that are uniquely experienced by African American children and adolescents in the United States. The chapter also discusses the types of psychological trauma that African American adolescents and children face growing up and the various coping mechanisms they sought to deal with their trauma. The chapter discusses how the psychological trauma can manifest in mental health issues in African American children and adolescents. Finally the chapter discusses mental health coping mechanisms of African American youth growing up in the current climate.
