The Joyful Freedom Approach to Cancer-Related Fatigue

Abstract

The book begins in a reflective style that takes the reader through early inspirations surrounding the existence and power of healing energy. These are fundamental assumptions that will feature throughout the unfolding of the Joyful Freedom Approach. Professor Emeritus Martha E. Rogers, previous Head of the Division of Nursing Education at New York University, and her visionary Science of Unitary Human Beings was a motivating force through the path and practice of professional nursing as an art and science for me. Rogers’ scholarly and original conceptualisations, set out in her Science of Unitary Beings, launched a new paradigm for nursing that was not merely a humanistic science dedicated to compassionate concern for maintain and promoting health, preventing illness and caring for rehabilitating the sick and disabled. The new perspective articulated that each person is a unified whole who functions as a synergistic system; an organism as a system that cannot be explained by knowledge of its parts. The person functions as a dynamic energy field that interacts with the energy fields of other people and the surrounding environment through simultaneous and constant exchanges. Key parts of the conceptual framework are revealed through recounting the Assumptions, Elements and Principles of Rogers’ framework, which provides a metaphysical foundation to the quest to resolve cancer-related fatigue.
