Abstract

Oral lasers are known to be safe and efficient; thereby, the technology is ideal in pre-prosthetic operations. The original concept of laser is adopted on Albert Einstein’s hypothesis of stimulated emission in 1917. The term “laser” was reported in the newspaper by Gordon Gould in 1959. The original laser called “ruby laser” was worked on by T. H. Maiman in 1960. The diode laser, the Nd:YAG laser, and the CO2 laser come under the soft tissue lasers. The Er:YAG laser comes under the hard tissue laser.

The Er:YAG laser is utilized in enamel hypoplasia, caries expulsion, and cutting bones at the impaction process; the Nd:YAG laser in frenectomy, clotting of vascular lesions, and gingivectomy; the diode laser in operculectomy, frenectomy, mucocele expulsion, biopsy and slitting of tissue, photobiomodulation to cure ulcerative injuries, and expulsion of oral fibroma; and the CO2 laser in vestibuloplasty elimination of fibroma and cysts and gingivoplasty.
