Abstract
For the last years, buyers concentrated on managing their direct suppliers, ignoring the much bigger share of suppliers beyond the direct supplier level. However, through a paradigm change in the market, the topic of the performance of sub-suppliers has become more important. In order for sub-supplier management to work effectively, firms require special internal and external capabilities. This chapter identifies the core capabilities needed for a successful management of sub-suppliers and includes some examples from the industry. It also derives recommendations for successfully implementing sub-supplier management capabilities from these examples.
