Abstract
This chapter reveals the inspiration for this volume, framed within the editor’s personal experience. Exploring the concepts of diaspora, hybridity, biculturalism, and transnationalism, the author discusses the complexities of being a Nigerian-American and becoming racially coded within the US social system. The author discusses the use of media in learning racial codes and shares a journey of looking for bicultural representation and finally being able to be located within emerging contemporary texts featuring first- and second-generation hybrid Americans. The remainder of the volume reviews literature on representations of immigrant life, constraints and concerns of representations, and audience reflections and responses to mediated representations.
