Abstract
2019 marked 30 years since the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This convention comprises the protection of children’s rights in a range of situations, one of which is the protection of children in armed conflict. This mandate to protect children in armed conflict has developed a complex infrastructure over the last three decades—an infrastructure made up of non-governmental organizations as well as United Nations working groups. The reporting relationships and mechanisms are somewhat opaque, however UN documents claim success in a particular pillar of child protection in armed conflict: the release and repatriation of child soldiers.
