Abstract
Shoulder instability is a spectrum of pathology that is commonly encountered by healthcare providers. It can be due to a single traumatic event or repetitive activities that lead to imbalance of the shoulder stabilizers. These injuries are often associated with congenital ligamentous laxity, as shoulder stability is dependent on soft tissue structures. Generally, shoulder instability can be categorized as anterior, posterior, or multidirectional instability. These pathologies can be diagnosed through a combination of a thorough history, a comprehensive physical exam, and a variety of imaging modalities. Patient risk factors for recurrent dislocations and pain as well as associated injuries dictate management.
