Abstract
This chapter presents the conclusion of this book. It is observed that relentless expansions in urbanization, population growth, and climate change continue to shrink the natural resource base in local communities resulting in competition and conflict. Weak resource institutions and ineffective methods have created a need for conflict intervention strategies. Increases in the availability and affordability of geospatial mapping technologies have empowered local communities worldwide to map their lands. The expectation is that PGIS and participatory mapping initiatives will be adopted to address resource conflicts in communities in the developing world. However, the future of the applications will be determined by the uses we design for geospatial mapping technology, the issues we choose to address in participatory mapping, and society’s plans and institutional arrangements.
