The Fixed Wireless Path

5G and Beyond Wireless Transport Technologies

Abstract

This chapter addresses the fixed wireless line-of-sight path, the transmission media for 5G wireless transport. It examines the behavior of such paths, looking at many influencing factors. Such factors include antenna characteristics, free space propagation, and fading phenomena as influenced by atmospheric effects such as multipath and rain attenuation and terrain effects such as diffraction and reflection. Finally, external interference, outage, availability, and diversity techniques for improved availability are reviewed.
