Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss how to evaluate nonlinear optical susceptibilities of various orders from the atomic properties using quantum mechanical techniques. Toward this purpose, specifically we introduce the density operator (matrix) method of treating statistical ensembles of atoms quantum mechanically.

The fundamental laws necessary for the mathematical treatment of a large part of physics are thus completely known, and the difficulty lies only in the fact that application of these laws leads to equations that are too complex to be solved.
