Abstract

Pakistan covers an area of 132,700 km2. It is bestowed with a rich natural heritage of pollinator’s diversity due to its diverse geographical features. The climate is subtropical and semiarid with ten agroecological zones. Many crops benefit from insect pollinations, which have a major impact on yield. The diversity of bees of different crops is still unexplored. The major work done on pollinator diversity belongs to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces with great ecological divisions. The bee fauna includes all the families of hymenopterans. Several crops benefit from the natural fauna of non-Apis bees along with honeybees, and a remarkable progress is going on toward commercial rearing of European bumblebees. The use of pesticides, climate change and land use change are considered as the major threats for bee populations. Severe yield losses have been noticed due to decline in pollinator diversity in northern and other irrigated areas. Pakistan National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan has been working on various issues in collaboration with the government of Pakistan and many national and international organizations for the better management and conservation of the natural biodiversity.
