Abstract
Thanks to the revolutionary changes of the past decade in the automotive industry, vehicles are finally ready for the serious consideration of autonomous driving. Achieving full autonomous driving can fundamentally transform society by removing the constraint of reduced mobility and rendering car crashes a rarity.

Note that while the term retransmission is used here, there is no actual feedback channel. In other words, it is repetition coding and not an ARQ process.
- 3.
Note that for NR both autonomous retransmission, as in LTE-V, and HARQ transmissions are supported (see Sect. 8.4.5.1).
- 4.
The standard calls these reference points, the reader may think of them as interfaces between functional elements of the 3GPP network.
- 5.
This is one of the major advances of NR V2X over LTE-V; the ability of using feedback to enables HARQ and AMC operations.
- 6.
The optional and mandatory capabilities as defined give the following advantage for the sidelink. Since all UE’s can receive 256 QAM transmissions, there is no need for capability exchange between the UE’s. The optional support for 256 transmission allows implementers to use a lower cost sidelink transmit chain if desired.
- 7.
NR V2X supports three retransmission procedures: autonomous retransmission, HARQ, and a “hybrid” procedure. The key difference between the transmission procedures is if and when the feedback is sent (see Sect. 8.3.7.2).
- 8.
The careful reader will now notice that the provisioning once provided by the V2X control function in the EPC is now being done by the PCF in the 5GC.
