Implant Reconstruction of the Sacrum: Modular Sacrum Prosthesis

Abstract

Reconstruction after total sacrectomy has always been challenging since an effective and durable reconstruction would demand spinal pelvic fixation (SPF), posterior pelvic ring fixation (PPRF), and anterior spinal column fixation (ASCF). Traditional methods to fulfill such a triad reconstruction are always time-consuming and accompanied with massive intra-operative hemorrhage. With the advent of 3D-printing technology, we have designed a 3D-printed, modular, sacrum prosthesis that incorporates the biomechanical characteristics of SPF, PPRF, and ASCF into one entity. Application of this sacrum prosthesis could achieve better spinopelvic stability and implant survival with no greater intra-operative hemorrhage or peri-operative complications compared with single SPF reconstruction and traditional combined reconstruction.
