Abstract
Primary malignant bone tumor of the diaphysis is less common than tumors over the metaphysis and epiphysis (Buch, et al., Advanced Biomedical Research 3:33, 2014). According to Sim et al., of the one thousand osteosarcoma cases recorded in the Mayo Clinic records, only approximately 7% of the lesions occurred in the diaphysis of long bones (Sim, et al., Orthopedics. 18:19–23, 1995). The incidence of humeral diaphyseal tumor is even less. Therefore, experience in treating tumors at those locations are usually sparse. The goal for limb salvage surgery for those tumors is not so different from tumors at other locations. “Adequate oncological resection” and “optimal reconstruction” to restore maximum function are still fundamental. To highlight key pearls and what we learned over the course, we share a case of primary diaphyseal osteogenic sarcoma over the right humeral diaphysis, treated with intercalary resection and biological reconstruction.
