Orthopedic Surgical Oncology For Bone Tumors

Abstract

Biological reconstruction using the Ilizarov technique is mainly used for the bone defect of long bones. This technique is often adopted for the bone defect after tumor resection and infection resection. It includes two methods depending on the length of the defect. If acute shortening of the defect is possible, lengthening at other site is used bone reconstruction, which is called acute shortening and lengthening. If acute shortening is impossible, then osteotomy at other site is performed to move bone fragment gradually, which is called bone transport.

There are some methods to reconstruct the bone defect. The advantages of these Ilizarov techniques are living bone reconstruction without sacrificing any healthy tissue, and with sufficient strength and durability, biological affinity, resistance against infection, and life-long restored function.
