Abstract

The distal femur is a common site for primary and metastatic bone tumors. Before the 1970s, the majority of the patients with high-grade sarcomas involving the distal femur were treated with amputation that has been associated with a less optimal functional and psychological outcome for the patients. The introduction of a multidisciplinary approach using chemotherapy and radiotherapy together with advances in surgical and diagnostic techniques allowed limb salvage surgery in most cases of sarcomas of the distal femur. Currently, with careful patient selection limb salvage surgery is possible in about 90% of the patients with bone sarcomas involving the distal femur. This is an advance in the field of orthopedic oncology surgery that does not only affect the patient functionally and psychologically but also has a positive socioeconomic impact, as studies have proven that limb salvage surgery with endoprosthetic reconstruction is eventually more cost-effective than amputation.
