Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (cSLE): Is It Really Different Than Adult-Onset SLE?

Outcome Measures and Metrics in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract

Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is often defined by an age cutoff. However, is it truly a different disease from adult-onset SLE (aSLE)? We review the existing literature on similarities and differences of important disease aspects in both cSLE and aSLE including epidemiology, genetics, classification criteria, medication use, mental health, growth and development, and social outcomes. As race may influence observed differences, we specifically address this consideration in racially homogeneous and heterogeneous populations and compare clinical manifestations, disease activity, and outcomes. We highlight direct comparative studies between cSLE and aSLE in the same cohort where available and focus on relevant adjusted analyses for potential confounders.
