Abstract

Along with energy and motion, moisture is an essential ingredient in creating weather and climate. This chapter reviews several of the many variables that can be used to express humidity, culminating in the most useful and powerful variables, including vapor pressure, relative humidity, specific humidity, wet-bulb temperature, dew point temperature, and virtual temperature. Each of these variables has advantages in particular cases, and each appears in modeling and forecasting the weather.
