Practical 3D Echocardiography

Abstract

Aortic root anatomy has been disregarded for a long time by cardiologists because of its apparent structural and functional simplicity. The advent of aortic valve sparing surgery and transcatheter aortic valve implantation renewed interest in the aortic root anatomy since both procedures require a systematic and thorough analysis of the anatomical details of this complex structure. In the last 2 decades, sophisticated imaging technologies, such as 3D transesophageal echocardiography and computed tomography, have provided a new “live and dynamic” three-dimensional understanding of this complex anatomical structure in “beating” hearts. The aim of this chapter is to provide an in-depth characterization of the aortic root anatomy as revealed by these sophisticated imaging techniques.
