Anesthetic Management in Pediatric General Surgery

Abstract

Thyroid goiters can present at any age and can lead to mass effects and metabolic derangements from thyroid dysfunction. Early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease in children is crucial. When surgical intervention is indicated, a systematic preoperative assessment with a multidisciplinary team is essential to medically optimize the patient for thyroid surgery. This chapter describes the basic anatomy and physiology of the thyroid gland, manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of thyroid disease. The preoperative assessment and unique anesthetic considerations of thyroid surgery are described, as well as surgical considerations and techniques.
