Abstract
Understanding the workflow of medical imaging is essential for the understanding of how different IT systems in the radiology department and the hospital are interconnected. The Hospital Information System (HIS), the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), the Order Entry System (OES), the Radiology Information System (RIS), the Imaging Modalities, the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), and many specialized IT Systems are all linked together. Information from these systems is needed at various steps of the work performed in the radiology department. This chapter introduces to the typical workflow within a radiology department and explains how this workflow is supported by the various IT systems.
