Abstract

Differentiation between focused cardiac ultrasound, targeted echocardiography and comprehensive echocardiography is important. All echocardiography and focused cardiac ultrasound in the critically ill must be interpreted in the pathophysiological context of the patient. Advanced echocardiography as applied to critical care is challenging, and should only be undertaken by appropriately trained practitioners. More research is needed to determine the applicability of out-patient echocardiography values and techniques to the critical care arena
