Abstract
This chapter deals successively with money, alchemy, magnetism and navigation, philosophy, and astronomy. The sequence of headings is somewhat arbitrary, since they are all connected. The inclusion of money with monasticism in this chapter is not accidental. It changed money from coins, a medium of exchange, into something much more potent. The other three topics focus on important discoveries and inventions involved the rise of science. Some other topics could have been included, but are covered in later chapters for organizational reasons. Admittedly magnetism, today, is a phenomenon, not a branch of knowledge. But before the Renaissance it was.
