Abstract

Effective citation is the backbone of a strong literature review. But citation is more than just referencing: you can accurately acknowledge your sources and still write a weak literature review. The trick is to turn your early draft – that laundry list of “facts-in-the-world” from your reading – into a compelling story of knowledge. By expanding your vocabulary of citation verbs and honing your critical summary skills, this chapter will help you to take a stance on the knowledge in your field and organize it to tell the story of a gap that matters, even if you are a novice researcher.
