Abstract
For-profit and nonprofit associations, such as the US News & World Report and the Leapfrog Group, publish rankings and ratings informed by voluntary surveys or publicly available data. Hospitals commit to survey participation based on the ability to devote resources to data retrieval and verification, their potential use of ranking information, and overall return on investment. Published results provide information to guide quality improvement through an organization’s established methodologies. An outline for the use of data from initial results review through improvement opportunity identification and prioritization within the organization is provided. The Magnet Recognition Program® confers their highly regarded designation upon organizations that apply and meet rigorous standards, based on the submission of comprehensive documents and successful site visit. Recognition, such as a Magnet Recognition Program®-designated organization, Leapfrog Top Hospital, or US News Best Hospital, projects an organization’s commitment to quality care and improvement.
