Abstract
The first part of this chapter starts with a conceptual and empirical review of the relationship between education and social cohesion. It describes the role of education in the promotion of social cohesion from the human capital theory perspective, mainly through the concepts of social capital and trust, and from the social democratic tradition, through the concepts of social stratification and social reproduction. The second part of the chapter explores the concept of segregation, and how it has been associated with educational inequalities. The final section of the chapter offers a conceptual map outlining the association between educational segregation and social cohesion, and a description of the key mechanisms through which social segregation in the school system can affect social cohesion.
