Abstract

This introductory chapter describes the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic, and international responses to it, to date. It describes some of the key spatial features of these developments and so makes the case as to why they should be of interest to academic geographers. Providing further disciplinary context, the latter half of the chapter outlines the history of geographical research on infectious disease in terms of perspectives and approaches, and moves on to provide an outline of the book ahead.
