Abstract
Latinos are the largest minority population in the United States, comprising 17.8% of the total U.S. population in 2016 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). Moreover, Latinos are an aging population, such that the number of Latinos ages 65 and older is projected to increase from 8% in 2016 to 21% by 2060 in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). Latinos also face a high burden of chronic disease. Relative to Whites, Latinos fare worse on indicators of well-being, such as self-rated health (Liang et al., 2010) and depressive symptoms (González, Tarraf, Whitfield, & Vega, 2010). This aging population faces a range of comorbidities and challenges in chronic disease management that further exacerbate health problems (Abraído-Lanza, White, Armbrister, & Link, 2006; Campos, Ullman, Aguilera, & Dunkel Schetter, 2014). Consequently, a major public health challenge among Latinos is disease management. To improve disease management and promote healthy aging among this population, it is important to identify coping patterns, as this will identify under-resourced groups for health promotion efforts.
