Abstract

The chapter describes the origins of wind and global patterns, the energy and power from wind, elements of wind turbines, and their types, properties, and components. The environmental impacts of wind turbines, such as noise and impact on birds, are discussed as well. A case study is provided.

Exercise 3

Exercise 3

  1. 1.

Make a comparative analysis between horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbines.

  2. 2.

What is the power coefficient of a wind turbine if the initial and final wind speeds are 20 m/s and 8 m/s? [0.59].

  3. 3.

What is the power that a wind turbine with a blade radius of 18 m receives from the wind that has a speed of 25 miles/h and operates at 30°C temperature? [817 kW].

  4. 4.

Describe the advantages and disadvantages of onshore and offshore wind turbines.

  5. 5.

At a certain place, if the wind speed at an elevation of 30 m is 2.6 m/s, what is the wind speed at a height of 60 m from the Power Law equation? Consider α = 0.2. [2.987 m/s].

  6. 6.

If the wind speed is doubled, what is the increase in the power extracted by a wind turbine? Show mathematically. [The power increases by 8 times].

  7. 7.

What are the feasibility considerations you need to study to design a 5 MW wind farm? What kind of hub height, turbine size, and area would you choose for the farm and why? Discuss your views regarding the design of a wind farm.
