Abstract
This chapter documents the extent and nature of contemporary “orientalist” imagery redolent in anti-Muslim speech, political discourse and media representation, exacerbated by Brexit, political leaders and far-right nationalism. Orientalist tropes provide the justificatory rationale for “speech acts” and conduct, including foreign policy, territorial ambitions in the “War on Terror” and face-to-face hate crime on the street. The law, situated between human rights protection and maintaining order, sets limits to speech but is ambiguous in its prohibition. Islamophobia and anti-Muslim fervour are evident in all cultural forms, including media, film and “satire”. At the same time, there is a political machine and will crushing and silencing political dissent and “core political speech” punishing all dissenters who challenge and expose racism and the imperialist objectives of the powerful.
