Abstract
This chapter deals with the various language contact situations in the Sherpa-speaking community living in Kathmandu Valley. It introduces the Sherpa people and language, offering brief ethnolinguistic and demographic information. It describes the various patterns of language use in different formal and informal domains and activities in order to show the effect of language contact among Sherpa people living in Kathmandu Valley, and deals with the various language attitudes that prevail among Sherpa. Finally, the chapter presents an analysis of the causes and impacts of language contact in Sherpa. Migrated Sherpa living in the capital city have been directly and indirectly affected by globalization and international trade and communication. Moreover, they have been involved in various social, cultural and ceremonial activities with the new mixed society which motivates them to shift into new target languages from their ancestral source language.
