Abstract
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are relatively common. Rupture of AAA can be one of the most dramatic acute surgical problems. It is associated with up to 80% mortality. A majority of patients die before reaching hospital. Timely diagnosis and expeditious operative treatment have the potential to reduce mortality rates; currently, patients able to reach the operating room have a 30% mortality rate (previously 50%).
