Abstract

Although overwhelming majority of uterine cervical carcinomas are high-risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV)-associated tumors, growing body of literature suggests the existence of a significant percentage of non-HPV cervical adenocarcinomas. This has led to the recent proposal of categorizing cervical adenocarcinomas into hrHPV-associated and hrHPV-nonassociated tumors. Rare examples of non-HPV-associated squamous cell carcinoma are also available in the literature, although that is not the norm. In addition, one should always remember the possibility of metastatic tumors, gestational trophoblastic tumors, and the great mimicker malignant melanoma while evaluating cervical biopsies/resections. Some benign lesions of the cervix can also create diagnostic challenges for practicing pathologists as these are not too frequently encountered in daily practice. This chapter attempts to address some of the questions and scenarios that a practicing pathologist may face in their daily practice.
