Issues and Challenges of Groundwater and Surface Water Management in Semi-Arid Regions

Abstract

Water is a precious natural resource which is severely stressed in many parts of the world. Semi-arid regions across the globe experience less rainfall and high evapotranspiration rates. Because water scarcity is a major concern in many semi-arid regions owing to the absence of perennial sources of water, available water resources must be managed. The main reasons for water scarcity are significant water demand and deficient regional recharges. Groundwater is a reliable source of water in arid and semi-arid regions, and it is widely consumed for irrigation, domestic and industrial uses. There is a link between the social and technical aspects of groundwater management. Research has shown that this source of water has profound social and economic benefits across the world. Exhaustive groundwater abstraction has led to aquifer overexploitation and, consequently, resulted in a lowering of the water table at an alarming rate. Currently groundwater in key aquifers is being rapidly depleted and aquifers are being degraded. The degradation is caused mainly by the disposal of human and industrial wastes and the percolation of pesticides and herbicides. This chapter discusses the various issues and challenges of groundwater and surface water management in semi-arid regions.
