Abstract
Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) refers to CO2 being used in the production of, e.g., plastic products to replace fossil feedstocks. Thus, CCU can lower CO2 emissions and the use of fossil resources. But the novel CCU products are still unfamiliar to the public. One way to raise public awareness and trust for CCU products could be a CCU label. Still, laypeople’s requirements for a trusted, informative CCU label are largely unknown. Thus, the present study follows two aims: 1. Exploring trust in a CCU label and uncovering which label characteristics are most relevant. 2. Investigating the potential of involving laypeople in the development of a CCU label and identifying requirements and preferences for the specific design of the label. These aims were addressed by combining a design workshop with laypeople (n = 6) with an online survey (n = 147). In the workshop, participants had to develop CCU label drafts. In the subsequent online survey, demands and preferences for an informative and trust-building CCU label were quantified. Results showed that information sources that inform the public about the label were vital for building CCU label trust. Also, trust- and design-related label characteristics were important for the overall positive evaluation of a CCU label draft. Based on the findings, specific recommendations for the development of a CCU label are derived.

As the design workshops contained different stages of label development, also statements and argumentations of the participants were analyzed that were mentioned in earlier discussion stages in relation to the label color, shape, and design elements later chosen for the two label designs “circle” and “triangle.”
