Abstract
Laparoscopic gastrectomy is a technically challenging procedure that is most commonly performed for oncologic resection of gastric cancer. Important considerations in planning a successful laparoscopic resection include the indications for surgery, tumour location and size, patient characteristics such as body habitus and previous surgery, choice of surgical set up (one versus two-surgeon technique), and the skills and experience of the operating team. Numerous choices exist regarding trocar placement and approach, order of performance of operative steps, reconstruction approaches and location of tumour extraction site. This chapter summarizes the key steps and potential pitfalls in performing both partial and total gastrectomy for cancer.
