Abstract
In this chapter, the craft of singing is discussed in terms of the meaning of singing in the context of Lithuanian culture and the specifics of Lithuanian musical education. The Lithuanian singing tradition is introduced as the way in which singing reflects the lifestyle of the nation and its role in the critical periods of national history as well as the construction of the contemporary Lithuanian identity. Singing is acknowledged to be the basis of Lithuanian musical education. Moreover, the realisation of the functions of singing in formal and non-formal musical education and the teacher’s role and competences in teaching children to sing are presented as the basis for craftsmanship in singing.
