Oncologic Emergency Medicine

Abstract

Emergency nursing is a specialty field that has evolved to meet the critical, time-sensitive needs of patients. As oncologic care progresses with new research for improved diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic measures, it has forged converging efforts with emergency care. Notably, these incredible advancements are juxtaposed with new challenges in the field of emergency medicine. To address the challenges, specialists in oncologic emergencies have embarked on the path of establishing best practices for the emergent needs of cancer patients and highlighting the significance of a multidisciplinary approach as a fundamental component of this emerging field. The collaboration between physicians and nurses in emergency settings is requisite to achieving desired outcomes in cancer emergencies. This chapter reviews the emergency nurse’s role in oncologic emergencies and systematic approaches related to emergency nursing practice. This chapter delves further into cancer-related systemic compromises and malignancy emergencies encountered along the continuum of care. Also included is a discussion of one of the newest challenges facing healthcare – the novel coronavirus pandemic, its implications on cancer patients, and possible risk-mitigation strategies. This chapter culminates in regulatory standards established by accrediting bodies and interpretations for cancer care organizations.
