Abstract
Not every emergency department belongs to a trauma center, but patients with traumatic injuries present to every emergency department. Thus, it is critical that all emergency medicine providers have strong foundations in acute management of the trauma patient. We begin this chapter with head trauma, reviewing topics such as the Glasgow Coma Scale and basilar skull fractures, followed by facial fractures and ophthalmologic trauma. We will also cover penetrating neck, chest, and abdominal trauma. This chapter includes multiple orthopedic trauma topics including extremity bone fractures, hip dislocations, and pelvic fractures. Lastly, we review compartment syndrome, bite wounds, burns, and blast injuries.
