Abstract

This chapter will feature an overview of the core concepts that define restorative justice, a number of case studies where restorative justice, principles, and practices have been implemented to varying degrees as well as the evidence that has emerged about impacts on the mental health of individuals and communities. In particular, I will analyze and report on a local Restorative Justice Program in Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition, I will offer case studies and examples from various international contexts—Northern Ireland, Burundi (East Africa), South Africa, South Korea, Israel and Palestine, the Ukraine, and Russia—where conflicts have erupted and where restorative principles have supported openness, responsibility, accountability, ethical decision-making, self-reflection, learning, healing, peacebuilding, and reconciliation.
