Abstract
Anesthesiologists are frequently called to code blues to intubate patients who have gone into cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. Occasionally, such patients are on the floor when they experience arrest. This can occur in out of OR settings, such as a hospital lobby, pharmacy, entrance, or bathroom. It is important for the code team to move the patient to a gurney or bed as soon as possible. However, depending on the exact location and patient body habitus, this may be quite challenging logistically. Due to time constraints, the anesthesiologist may choose to proceed with intubation on the ground. This chapter discusses several techniques for intubating on the ground and highlights ergonomic challenges.
