Brief Strategies for Improving Self-Awareness and Beliefs

Abstract

This chapter provides more detail about the criteria for brief SEL/SEAD strategies for improving self-awareness and beliefs and where they might fit in a framework. The development and importance of growth mindsets are provided along with the critical variables needed to implement growth mindset interventions. Mindsets related to students’ mental health and personality in particular are discussed. Emotion mindsets, a new area of study, is featured. Changing emotion mindsets may be important for a student’s adaptive functioning. Students’ theories about whether or not emotions can change play a valuable role in their emotional functioning, particularly during adolescence. Students who believe that emotions can change are more likely to use effective strategies to control their emotions and enhance their resilience to deal effectively with situations that trigger strong emotions. Because the future becomes part of students’ self- concepts during early adolescence, belief in a positive future is important for all students. If the future can be brought closer, it would influence student effort, persistence, and academic performance.
