Abstract

The artisanal fisheries or small-scale fisheries are the most traditional fishing activity in the Alboran Sea. They are deeply rooted in the region, constituting an essential element of coastal communities. In the Alboran Sea, artisanal fisheries have traditionally played an important role in social and economic aspects. They have been present in many issues of everyday life, influencing the traditional way in the fishing villages, popular festivals, local cooking, vocabulary, and even the coastal landscape.

The Moroccan artisanal fishing fleet registered in 2019 in the Alboran Sea, is about 3100 boats based in a total of 90 landings sites for fishing products, including 6 fishing ports, 5 fishing villages, and 8 landing points. The fleet is composed of fishing units less than 3 GRT, equipped with multiple fishing gear (gillnet, longline, handline, purse seine, and trap) to target a multi-specific pelagic and demersal resources.

During the period 2013-2018, the total landings of artisanal fleet have amounted to 25,792 tons. More than 50 species are caught. Cephalopods and pelagic species represent the most important contribution to the total landings.

Regarding socioeconomic aspects, the value of sales related to artisanal fisheries in 2018 was more than 23 million €, which represents 39% of the total sales in the fish markets. There is no clear increase in the number of jobs associated with this activity. However, it is known that small-scale fisheries sector in Morocco is more stable in the consolidation of employment than the coastal fishing sector.
