Abstract

A piecing together of diary entries, newspaper reports, and The South Pole accounts paints a full picture of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition’s arrival and stay in Buenos Aires, as portrayed in this chapter. Events include the following: The welcoming of the expedition by expedition patron Don Pedro Christophersen and the Norwegian La Plata Society of Argentina on May 23, 1912; the gifting of some of the South Pole dogs to Don Pedro Christophersen and his family; the presentation and speech by Amundsen at a commemorative banquet; the naming of an Antarctic mountain for Christophersen; the exhibition of the remaining sled dogs at the Buenos Aires Zoo; and the departure of most of the expedition members to Norway on June 7, with the exception of Roald Amundsen, Thorvald Nilsen, a few crewmen, and the 22 sled dogs.
