Abstract
This introduction is a brief summary of the state of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1912, as of January 26, 1912, following the return of Roald Amundsen, his sled dogs, and his party from the South Pole—where they had been the first to reach that coveted geographical destination—and just prior to the preparation for their departure from Antarctica. The chapter summarizes highlighted points from the author’s first volume of this history, Roald Amundsen’s Sled Dogs: The Sledge Dogs Who Helped Discover the South Pole, and prepares the reader for the second part of the story.
