Abstract

The standard treatment for blepharitis includes topical or systemic therapy to reduce inflammation, increase meibum flow, and reduce bacterial load. These therapies include warm compresses, eyelid scrubs, topical anti-inflammatory agents, topical antibiotics, and oral antibiotics. Due to the lack of a truly curative treatment for blepharitis, a primary goal of treatment is symptomatic relief. In some patients with severe disease, medical management is often insufficient, and recent research has been focused on developing advancements in the procedural treatments of blepharitis. This chapter highlights some of the innovative procedural treatments for meibomian gland disease and blepharitis. There is also a discussion of the surgical treatment of complications of blepharitis such as trichiasis and distichiasis.
