Abstract
As critical care medicine has evolved, advanced monitoring and technology means procedures previously confined to the operating room can be safely performed in the ICU under a team-guided delivery system. The safe and efficient completion of these procedures requires an interdisciplinary approach involving nursing, respiratory therapy, and providers along with other supportive specialties. Even emergency procedures reliant on “low-frequency, high-stakes” decision-making can be improved by crew resource management and the fundamentals of teamwork and collaborative care.
Advanced practice providers (APPs) play a uniquely flexible role in the ICU, ranging from assessment, diagnosis, and plan to communication and implementation. APPs share the responsibility for safe periprocedural care and as part of the interdisciplinary team can reduce provider burnout, reduce medical errors, and increase patient safety. Specialty training equips the critical care nurse practitioner or physician assistant with the skills to coordinate, perform, and assist in bedside procedures.
This chapter will provide an overview of the multidisciplinary critical care team and describe the scope of advanced practice providers in ICU procedures.
